Acute Hep A
Acute, active infection = anti-HAV IgM
Previous infection = anti-HAV IgG
Hepatitis B
Surface antigen = HBsAg (outnumbers HBV virions in serum)
Envelope antigen = HBeAg
Core antigens = HBcAg, HBeAg
HBsAg: Acute or Chronic infection; infectious status. Persistence 6 months after acute illness indicates chronic Hep B.
Anti-HBs: Recovery & immunity from Hep B. after clearance of HBsAG and successful vaccination against Hep B.
Anti-HBc: A measure of both immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG). Appears with onset of symptoms in acute Hep B and persists for life.
HBeAg: viral replication & infectivity.
HBV DNA: viral replication & infectivity.

How to interpret test results
Hepatits C
HCV & antibody & HCV DNA: Infection.
Hepatits D
Hep D virus only causes infection in patients also infected with Hep B.
