Ocular Alignment (Hirschberg’s test)

Ocular Alignment Assessment
Assess ocular alignment (eye straightness) using the following measurements: 1. Limbus to lid margin distance.
    • Ask the patient to look straight ahead and observe the relation of the limbus (the junction between the cornea and sclera) to the lid margins; these distances should be equivalent in both eyes.
2. Corneal light reflection.
    • Use corneal light reflection (Hirschberg’s test) to assess ocular alignment. When the eyes are centered, the point of corneal light reflection falls slightly medial the center of the cornea. In all fields of gaze, the distance between the light reflection from each cornea and the center of the cornea should be the same.
