Hyponatremia - Causes

Hyponatremia

• Abnormally low blood sodium levels (less than 135 mEq/L).

Beware of pseudohyponatremia: hyponatremia without hyop-osmolality:

• Conditions with hyponatremia + high plasma osmolality:

hyperglycemia, mannitol or glycerol admin.

• Conditions with hyponatremia + normal plasma osmolality:

hyperproteinemia, hyperlipidemia, prostate surgery (with use of glycine or sorbitol fluids).
