Racoon Eyes (aka Panda Eyes (in the UK))
- Bilateral Periorbital Ecchymosis
- Bluish/Purplish hematologic discoloration in the upper and lower eyelids.
Causes
- Facial soft tissue trauma (benign)
versus
Basilar skull fracture (potentially lethal*).
- Look for Battle's sign, CSF Rhinnorhea, and get skull imaging (Head CT).
versus
- Neuroblastoma
- Rare, but be on the look-out in kids who present with Racoon Eyes and NO antecedent trauma.
Battle's sign
- Retroauricular ecchymosis (hematoma behind the ear)
CSF Rhinnorhea
- CSF leakage from the nares.
- Indicates a breach in blood/brain barrier and places patient at risk for meningitis.
