Racoon Eyes (aka Panda Eyes (in the UK))
  • Bilateral Periorbital Ecchymosis
    • Bluish/Purplish hematologic discoloration in the upper and lower eyelids.
Causes
  • Facial soft tissue trauma (benign)
versus Basilar skull fracture (potentially lethal*).
    • Look for Battle's sign, CSF Rhinnorhea, and get skull imaging (Head CT).
versus
  • Neuroblastoma
    • Rare, but be on the look-out in kids who present with Racoon Eyes and NO antecedent trauma.
Battle's sign
  • Retroauricular ecchymosis (hematoma behind the ear)
CSF Rhinnorhea
  • CSF leakage from the nares.
    • Indicates a breach in blood/brain barrier and places patient at risk for meningitis.
