Rare pancreatic/duodenal tumor that can be functional or non-functional
Non-functional tumors are more commonly found in the duodenum and can obstruct the biliary ducts; can cause pain vomiting, and jaundice.
Functional tumors secrete somatostatin - inhibits growth hormone and other pituitary hormones; suppresses the release of several gastrointestinal hormones (glucagon, cholecystokinin, secretin, etc.).
Thus, digestive functioning is impaired (including gastric emptying and bile flow), and patients often present with diabetes mellitus and/or steatorrhea.
