Hematuria refers to blood in the urine.
Hematuria can be gross or microscopic; transient or persistent.
- Mircoscopic: 3 or more RBCs/hpf in Urinary Analysis.
Causes of Hematuria:
- Urinary tract infection or inflammation
- Trauma
- Urinary tract stones
- Sexual activity
- Vigorous exercise
- Endometriosis
- Urinary tract tumors
- Hemophilia or other blood clotting disorders
- Sickle cell disease
- Glomerular kidney disease

Evaluation
Assess other signs/symptoms (pain, dysuria, urgency, etc.), urinalysis, cystoscopy.
Be aware that some foods and drugs can produce red/orange urine: rifampin, phenytoin, beets, senna, food dyes, rhubarb, etc.
