Pupil Response to Light

In dim light, ask the patient to focus on a distant object (to avoid accommodation). Shine a beam of light into one pupil. Both pupils should constrict briskly and equally. Ipsilateral pupillary constriction is the direct response and contralateral pupillary constriction is the indirect (or consensual) response.
