Intraventricular Hemorrhage

Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH)
Primary IVH (~ 30%)
  • Confined to the ventricular system.
    • Arises from an intraventricular source or a source that is contiguous to the ventricles.
    • Eg, Examples intraventricular trauma, aneurysm, vascular malformation, and choroid plexus tumor, usually involving the choroid plexus.
Secondary IVH (~ 70%)
  • Extension of an intraparenchymal hemorrhage.
  • Extension of subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Risk factors for intraventricular hemorrhage
  • Older age
  • Large ICH volume
  • Hypertension
  • Deep, subcortical structure sites of hemorrhage
    • Putamen (35%–50%), cerebral lobes (30%), thalamus (10%–15%).
