Encephalocele & Cephalocele

    * Encephalocele is a sac-like protrusion of the cerebrum and meninges through a skull defect; it is due to failure of neural tube closure. It can occur anywhere along the midline of the skull, but most commonly occurs:
    • At the occiput
    • Top of the head
    • At the junction of the forehead and the nose
  • Cephalocele (similar to meningocele in the spine) is a herniation of the meninges, only, through a cranial defect.
    • These most often occur in the midline occipital region.
    • When they occur frontally, they often have associated hypertelorism (an increased distance between the orbits).
