Related Anatomy
Muscles of the anterior arm flex the arm and/or forearm, and are innervated by the
musculocutaneous nerve.*
Muscles
Biceps brachii
Two heads with distinct origins:
- Long head originates on the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula and passes through the intertubercular sulcus.
- Short head originates on the coracoid process.
- Both heads insert onto the radial tuberosity of the radius.
- Flexes the arm (at the shoulder), flexes the forearm (at the elbow), supinates at the radio-ulnar joint
Coracobrachialis
- Originates on the coracoid process of the scapula.
- Inserts on the shaft of the humerus (specifically, the middle one-half or distal third).
- Flexes and adducts the humerus.
- The musculocutaneous nerve of the brachial plexus pierces coracobrachialis.
Brachialis
- Originates on the shaft of the humerus (specifically, the distal half).
- Inserts on the ulnar coronoid process and tuberosity.
- Main flexor of the forearm.
Anatomy
- The medial bicipital groove lies in the subcutaneous space between biceps brachii and brachialis; branches of the brachial plexus and the brachial artery reside in this space.
