Arm - Anterior Compartment

Related Anatomy
Muscles of the anterior arm flex the arm and/or forearm, and are innervated by the musculocutaneous nerve.*
Muscles
Biceps brachii Two heads with distinct origins:
  • Long head originates on the supraglenoid tubercle of the scapula and passes through the intertubercular sulcus.
  • Short head originates on the coracoid process.
  • Both heads insert onto the radial tuberosity of the radius.
  • Flexes the arm (at the shoulder), flexes the forearm (at the elbow), supinates at the radio-ulnar joint
Coracobrachialis
  • Originates on the coracoid process of the scapula.
  • Inserts on the shaft of the humerus (specifically, the middle one-half or distal third).
  • Flexes and adducts the humerus.
  • The musculocutaneous nerve of the brachial plexus pierces coracobrachialis.
Brachialis
  • Originates on the shaft of the humerus (specifically, the distal half).
  • Inserts on the ulnar coronoid process and tuberosity.
  • Main flexor of the forearm.
Anatomy
  • The medial bicipital groove lies in the subcutaneous space between biceps brachii and brachialis; branches of the brachial plexus and the brachial artery reside in this space.
